Ghana Overtakes Philippines as Vietnam’s Top Rice Export Market in September - Full Analysis (2025)

A surprising shift in Việt Nam's rice export market has taken place, with Ghana emerging as the country's top rice buyer in September. This development is particularly notable given the Philippines' temporary suspension of rice imports, which has led to a significant change in Việt Nam's export landscape.

Việt Nam's rice exports for the first nine months of the year reached 6.83 million tonnes, generating $3.49 billion in revenue. However, there was a notable decline of 2.05% in volume and a substantial 19.98% drop in value compared to the previous year.

September saw a sharp decrease in rice exports, with a 43.27% reduction in volume and a staggering 54.73% drop in value compared to the same period in 2022.

But here's where it gets interesting: Ghana's emergence as the largest importer of Vietnamese rice, accounting for nearly 22% of total exports, has filled the gap left by the Philippines. Côte d'Ivoire and Malaysia followed closely, becoming the second and third largest importers, respectively, with market shares of over 21% and nearly 10%.

The Philippine government's decision to suspend rice imports for two months, starting September 1, was a response to falling domestic rice prices. However, market analysts predict that Việt Nam's overall rice exports will remain strong, thanks to increasing demand from other regions.

And this is the part most people miss: the Philippines, one of Việt Nam's major buyers, will review the situation in 60 days and decide whether to reopen imports. This provides Việt Nam with an opportunity to adjust its export strategy and maintain its position in the global rice market.

Despite the temporary halt in rice imports from the Philippines, Việt Nam's rice export is expected to exceed 8.2 million tonnes for the whole year. This is largely due to the rising demand and shipments to emerging markets like Bangladesh, China, and South Africa.

So, what does this mean for Việt Nam's rice industry? With the Philippines potentially reopening imports, will Việt Nam be able to maintain its diverse export market and continue its growth trajectory?

These questions highlight the dynamic nature of the global rice trade and the challenges and opportunities that arise for Việt Nam's rice exporters.
